Diego Maradona has selected his 30-man provisional squad and there were a few surprises. The most surprising was the omission of two potential Champions League winners. Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti could potentially lift the Champions League trophy this coming Saturday. That does not seem to impress Maradona at all. Also Fernando Gago and defender Gabriel Milito are also out.
In group play, Argentina have a very manageable path to the next round. They are paired with Greece, Nigeria, and South Korea. There should not be any problems there but you never know. Nigeria will be physically aggressive and would be the team to produce a shock result. I fully expect Argentina to finish top of their group. Especially if Carlos Tevez can keep up his club form this summer. The Argentine has scored 28 goals since he Manchester swap of red to blue. Of course the player with the most pressure on him, Lionel Messi, will be looking to add a World Cup title to his resume. This is the last hurdle many feel that is in his way to being considered one of the greatest players of all time.
Goalkeepers: Sergio Romero (AZ Alkmaar), Mariano Andujar (Catania), Diego Pozo (Colon)
Defenders: Nicolas Burdisso (Inter Milan), Martin Demichelis (Bayern Munich), Walter Samuel (Inter Milan), Gabriel Heinze (Olympique Marseille), Nicolas Otamendi (Velez Sarsfield), Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle), Juan Manuel Insaurralde (Newell's Old Boys), Clemente Rodriguez (Estudiantes), Ariel Garce (Colon)
Midfielders: Javier Mascherano (Liverpool), Sebastian Blanco (Lanus), Juan Sebastian Veron (Estudiantes), Jesus Datolo (Olympiacos), Jose Sosa (Estudiantes), Maximiliano Rodriguez (Liverpool), Mario Bolatti (Fiorentina), Juan Mercier (Argentinos Juniors), Angel Di Maria (Benfica), Jonas Gutierrez (Newcastle), Javier Pastore (Palermo)
Forwards: Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid), Diego Milito (Inter Milan), Martin Palermo (Boca Juniors), Carlos Tevez (Manchester City), Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli).
