France are looking to win their 2nd World Cup after triumphing in 1998. This year the French side are ranked 10th going into the tournament. That may appear to be low but the French side have not performed as expected in the last few major tournaments. So look for them to try and change that this year.
There were more than a few surprises in the provisional 30-man squad. There was no room for Arsenal midfielder Samri Nasri or Manchester City midfielder Patrick Vieira. The biggest surprise is that Karim Benzema of Real Madrid was also left out. The expensive striker did not have his best season in his debut for Real Madrid but I figured he would at least make the trip. Either way France have a ton of quality upfront with Henry, Anelka, and Ribery all making the squad. One concern at the back will be the fitness of William Gallas. The man every teammate loves to hate is battling fitness and will be a big miss if he is not able to take part in this World Cup. How far can France go in this tournament? Well they should make it out of their group easily. Then again stranger things have happened.
