Final Round of World Cup Qualifying

Today is a big day if you are a supporter of a couple of big national teams still trying to book their ticket to South Africa.  Argentina and Portugal are the two teams the world will be watching this evening as action gets under way.

Argentina travels to Uruguay in what is the biggest match of possibly all of their competitive games for the last 30 years.  This match has a few different possible outcomes.  Argentina will  need win in order to secure a route through to the next round.  If they draw they will have a chance to drop to the playoffs if Ecuador beats Chili by 5 goals or more.  If they lose tonight they will still have a slim chance to make the playoffs.  However, that means that Chili must avoid a loss against Ecuador otherwise its lights out for Maradona and his troops.

Portugal have a job to do as well.  Their job fortunately is not as massive as the Argentines.  Portugal plays Malta and by all means should move on easily.  It is possible that they go out.  By possible we mean that if they go out it is time to buy a lottery ticket from your local convenience store or stay away from tall trees and metal objects.  Either way it looks as if Portugal will go through and Ronaldo will be playing in South Africa.

So there you have it.  Will Argentina make a mess of it?  Can Portugal cruise?  The action in Portugal kicks off at 2:45pm Eastern Standard time.  The action in Uruguay will begin at 6:00pm Eastern Standard time.
