Champions League Preview: Bayern Munich vs. Manchester United

This draw is a repeat of the memorable 1999 final which saw United come back from a goal down to win the trophy for the second time.  It is quite possibly the greatest memory for any Manchester United fan and the worst for the Munich faithful.  This tie will feature plenty of goals for sure. Wayne Rooney is in the form of life.  Bayern Munich have both Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.  Get ready for a sensational two legs.

The odds will favor United but Sir Alex will know that this will not be an easy test.  United will have to be at their best defensively if they want to progress.  Up front they know they have Rooney, Park, Giggs, Nani, and Valencia to do the job.  In the back is where they will be concerned.  Three of the four defensive slots are locked up.  The main question will come from Gary Neville at right back.  Robben or Ribery will have instructions to go at him every chance they get.  Sir Alex has a big choice to make.  He can go with the experience of Neville or the athleticism of Rafael da Silva.  Midfield is another big battle.  You can rest assured Darren Fletcher will be the first name on the team sheet to slot into midfield.  After Michael Carrick's performance against Liverpool he may be dropped in favor of Giggs or Scholes.  I expect Park will take up his custom made defensive attacking midfielder slot with Nani and Valencia on the wings.  Then again Park may play on the wing to help whoever is at right back with either Robben or Ribery.

Bayern Munich currently sit at the summit in the German Bundesliga.  They are one point ahead of their closest rival Shalke who they take on this afternoon.  Munich will feel a little like United in the attacking sense.  With Robben and Ribery on the wings and Thomas Muller up front they are a dangerous trio.  If that doesn't work out then they can bring heading expert Miroslav Klose off of the bench.  The big question will come from defense.  Bayern are only in the Quarter-finals thanks to the away goals rule.  They tied Fiorentina 4-4 on aggregate in the last round but advanced thanks to two away goals scored by Mark van Bommel and Arjen Robben.  So their defense will have to play out of their skin if they want to make life easy for themselves.  Look for right back Philip Lahm to keep a close watch on Valencia.  He also will probably have instructions to pick and choose his runs forward sparingly.

With the way United have been playing lately with the thrashing of AC Milan they will be the favorites for sure.  However, any real fan knows that this tie will be much closer in reality.  The edge may come because United have the advantage of playing the second leg at home.  They also have slightly easier games.  Munich plays Stuttgart on Saturday and then host Manchester United on Tuesday.  United play Birmingham on Saturday and then head to Munich for the match on Tuesday.  It is the little things that could decide this tie.

This match kicks off Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 2:45pm.  Make sure you watch!
