I am a bit underwhelmed by the draw. A large majority of the groups seem to be cakewalks for the top sides, as a lot of the groups are filled with crap teams. I think there are two big countries missing that would have made the World Cup a lot better: Croatia and Russia.
But for England’s sake, good reddens! England have had a favorable draw, it must be said – U.S., Algeria, and Slovenia. Having said that, England have had favorable draws in the past and bottled it. These groups don’t win themselves and no team in Group C will roll over easily. Slovenia put Russia out over two legs and Algeria put out a strong Egypt side. I didn’t forget the United States! The United States (on paper) pose the greatest threat to England, but I think they will be fighting it out with Slovenia for 2 nd place in the group. So England to top the group and move onto the knock out stage. Here it’s a tossup for which team they might get; I can’t pick a runner up to Germany out of Australia, Ghana, and Serbia. I would fancy England to beat any of those teams though. In the quarters the Three Lions could face an Argentina side that really struggled to qualify for this World Cup. Now England have had a hard time making it past the quarters in previous tournaments (damn penalties), but I would back them to beat Argentina and get knocked out in the Semis! And I would be very happy with that.
Brazil and Spain in the final? Ivory Coast the dark horse? England to bring the trophy back to where football was created? I can’t wait!
