David Beckham To Miss World Cup

David Beckham tore his Achilles tendon today in AC Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo.  Beckham looked good in this match and has actually been looking good since his return to Milan this year.  He almost got on the scoresheet with a brilliant pass from Ronaldinho in the second half.  For him to get injured in this way seems a little unfair.  This was to be Beckham's 4th World Cup and will probably call time on his national team career.  This is a big blow for not only Beckham but also AC Milan, the L.A. Galaxy, and the England National Team.  Let's take a look at how this injury impacts these teams.

AC Milan have been on a sort of revival as of late.  With their win today they are only one point behind Inter Milan in the Italian Serie A.  They were able to make up ground on their city rivals for two reasons.  If we are being completely honest Inter Milan has let them back into the race.  They were ahead by 9 points at one stage of the season and have since only won once in their last 6 matches in the Italian division.  The other reason Milan were on the up is because of the play of David Beckham.  He doesn't set the stats book a light like he used to but his overall play has been superb.  In Milan's recent loss to Manchester United, he was one of the few players that could hold their head up as putting in a respectable shift.  AC Milan need all the legs they can get with the age of their team.  Beckham provided experience that every manager would dream of.  Milan's chase of Inter will be that much more difficult without Beckham in the side.

Beckham's time at AC Milan is just a temporary loan deal.  After that he would return to the Los Angeles Galaxy to play in Major League Soccer.  Unfortunately with an injury of this type he will be out for 5 to 8 months according to a report from AC Milans physio that was quoted on Soccernet.  The MLS is already having a tough time of as it is with the potential strike looming over the leagues head.  Now their star player is out for the upcoming season as well.  The LA Galaxy will have no way to replace the type of player Beckham is.  Their season isn't ruined as they still have some time to make changes if needed.  They also have Landon Donovan so they aren't completely out of it.  The problem is that Beckham is much more than just a player to them.  He sells jerseys.  He sells tickets.  He sells television time.  Now that he is out it will be interesting to see how any of that changes in the upcoming months.

Out of all the team's mentioned the biggest blow will probably be felt by the England National Team.  Even thought Beckham isn't the captain he is still a big part of the England setup.  He is also one of the better English right wingers they have.  If Antonio Valencia was English this may not be a problem.  However, Joe Cole has looked a shadow of his former self, Aaron Lennon is hit or miss, and Theo Walcott has yet to earn the right to go to his second World Cup for me.  With everything going on with the England camp the only positive to look forward to are Wayne Rooney's form.  In the wake of the John Terry debacle the last thing England need is more interruptions.  Beckham may not have started every game for England but he would have been an effective asset to have.  He was looking forward to this final World Cup.  This tournament is the reason he did the loan deal with AC Milan to begin with.  Sad to say that he may never play another game for England.
